"Viral Marketing Makes People Drink-Cat Poop?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:36:14

By Megan Carruth According to Wikipedia. Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awarenessit can harness the network effect of the Internet and can be very useful in reaching a large number of people rapidly. Apparently it can convince people that they should drink coffee processed from cat excrement too. No kidding. While the behavior of these cat - poop drinkers would provide hours of blogging entertainment as a subject all its own we are delving into this sensational stunner to speak to a larger point. Viral Marketing when done right can have wild implications for your business. Okay okay first well dish the dirt: Jim Cone is owner of Coffee and Tea Limited located at the Mall of America here in Minnesota. Jim is offering the most expensive (and arguably the most bizarre ) type of coffee in the world java roasted from beans already partially digested from Indonesian Civet Cats. The beans are retrieved from the excrement thoroughly washed and roasted at about 420 degrees. Kopi Kuwak. Is the name. Jim Cone told CBS News: It's a very rich ah cup of coffee very chocolaty ah actually a carmelly taste around the bottom of your tongue." No kidding! I live in Minnesota. And I love coffee. Rarely seen without it actually. But like the good search marketer. I retrieve my news from Google and am often times more interested in upcoming mergers in 2007 than I am in what my local news station has to offer. (Perhaps this simply means I dont observe the news as much as I should) in either case. I usually get a good amount of current events from my coworkers during the day and needless to say several of them came knockin on the coffee ladys door today with You wont believe what I heard this morning. Again like a good search marketer what do you suppose was the first thing I did? Technorati. How many people have blogged about this? Andhow did they find out about it? Google. What news stations reported on this besides the one in my home town? Digg. Who read these news stories and submitted them? Is this a case of viral marketing and could it become a marketing pandemic? Were not sure yet. But by asking these questions the evolution from simple story to marketing pandemic can be tracked analyzed and recreated in order to harness the power of viral marketing. Lets take a look at how this viral marketing fairy tail begins Like most brand awareness. It starts with PR. Once upon a time a local news station reports this story on the evening news. This of course is not viral marketing per say rather public relations but could arguably called the first falling domino. Mainstream Media Teams up with Word of Mouth. Im not a fan of radio in Minneapolis but that doesnt mean other people arent. Apparently the KS95 served up this steaming hot cup of a story on their morning show and two of my co workers caught the whiff. My interest is peeked. Ive caught something. The most powerful and far reaching media giant grabs holdthe Internet! No medium has grown faster than the Internet. With an estimated 175 billion users online and with 90% of those being search engine users the internet has become the bloodline that carries these marketing viruses. Like the rest of America. I turned to the internet and found that: Technorati returned 1,458 results for blogs containing the term kopi luwak. Of those 1,458 results just under 20 were posts directly relating to this purveyor out of Minnesota and 11 were submitted just in the last 2 days since this story broke. Most of these 11 bloggers cited word of mouth as their information source. Apparently out of those bloggers none are search engine marketers or savvy web 2.0 techies because as yet no social content sharing network has picked up this gem. This is where the story becomes on-belay. If web 2.0 decides they like the story. (thats content sharing networks personified) if its worth sharing we just might have even more to report on. Im sure Hubby who also works in web will have plenty to say to his coworkers after he finds out his his Lady was home from work late because she was at the Mall of America drinking a cuppo-cat-poo. No kidding. We are going to follow this story and we want you to participate. Email this story to two people. Submit it to Digg. Think were self interested? Find the news story on CBS and submit that. Drop us a line and let us know how many people you infected. A few quadratic equations later well be back to demonstrate the exponential power of viral marketing the internet and web 2.0 *Authors Note: Even if youre convinced that viral marketing can do wonders for a business (just ask Jim Cone Im going to when I patronize his Coffee shop tonight.) the larger question remains: Yes surebut how can I make viral marketing work for my business? Although most e-businesses are have launched or are planning to launch viral marketing campaigns there is one obstacle that prohibits marketers from reproducing them successfully. Many marketers have trouble identifying what kind of information rivets audiences and more importantly what prompts that audience to pass along that information either by word of mouth or via the internet. Author: Lady Venom (lvsinsanity)Title: change state In the DarkRating: PG13 (For Splinter violence. aka do by)Pairing: OT4 (although it's only vaguely mentioned)This story has been plaguing me for a while now and I finally managed to get some of it out. It's not long but I just wanted some feedback. It's going to be very OOC for Splinter (maybe) because who really knows how the Rat command would act if he knew his family was screwing around? Another twitch of the small nose atop a long equip and Splinter's eyes opened to gaze at his closed doors. His eldest son watched with curious eyes wondering what it was his father was sniffing. Their incense did not seem too overpowering tonight. He grew worried when the rats ears swivelled send as well. Pausing outside the closed door. Splinter stood motionless as soft sounds from within reached his sensitive ears. The look of hatred and disgust did not pass unnoticed to Leo who stood steady beside the older mutant. He had warned his brothers the unnecessary hazard that staying inside the lair when together brought upon them. Whenever he could he would alter them go topside or at least somewhere else in the sewers. It was safer for all of them because no one knew how Splinter would have reacted to experience. Furry hands taloned with claws gripped Leonardo's arm shoving him roughly out of the way before proceeding through the closed door. Trying one last measure to deliver his brothers. Leo stood before his father again blocking his view of the dim dwell lit by a single candle.

"Obama could win with 'Oprah effect'" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 21:33:36

WASHINGTON -- The conventional wisdom says that celebrity endorsements don't mean much in politics. But the conventional wisdom also says that desire difficult novels published more than a century ago don't suddenly become best-sellers today. Now we're about to see whether the "Oprah effect" can do for Barack Obama what it did for Leo Tolstoy. The Obama campaign's announcement that Oprah Winfrey will barnstorm the early primary states with the candidate she has called "my favorite guy" was big news in Iowa. New Hampshire and South Carolina. Theoretically the active support of a popular talk-show host shouldn't have much effect on Obama's prospects. But we're talking Oprah here. The Pew Research Center actually polled on the subject in September shortly after Winfrey hosted a fundraiser that netted an estimated $3 million for Obama's race. According to the Pew survey. 15 percent of Americans said that Winfrey's endorsement would make them more likely to choose for Obama. 15 percent said less likely and 69 percent said it would make no difference to them. But 60 percent of respondents predicted that Winfrey's support would help Obama's candidacy against only 3 percent who said it would hurt. And among Democrats -- who after all are the voters who count at this point -- 23 percent said they would be more likely to vote for Obama because of Winfrey's give while just 13 percent said they'd be less likely to vote for him. The Pew survey found that Winfrey's endorsement also gives Obama a boost among women (17 percent more likely to vote for him. 12 percent less likely) and African-Americans (28 percent more likely. 16 percent less likely). No one expects Winfrey's appearances with Obama this month to have the astonishing impact of Oprah's Book unify. Perhaps the best example of the "Oprah effect" came three years ago when she picked Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" as a monthly selection and the epic tome shot to the top of the best-seller list. But Winfrey occupies a unique place in American culture; her show offers a blend of self-empowerment spirituality and consumerism that enthralls millions of viewers. She has steered clear of electoral politics -- until now. In an converse with the Hollywood Reporter. Winfrey said she ordain not use her "platform" on Obama's behalf -- meaning her show and her magazine -- but instead will speak for him with her "personal voice." Why? "Because I felt it was the right thing to do. And you know. I weighed that: What is the cost.

"Where did file associations go in Windows Vista?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:13:21

I construe this question and went "huh?". But you're absolutely right; thefile association dialog that we've come to love and hate that's been move ofWindows Explorer is no longer there. The question of cover is where did it go? To a more logical placeperhaps but with nary a roll as to how to sight it. File associations are used to tell Windows what program opens what kind offile. For example after you install Microsoft Office register associations tellWindows that a " doc" file should be opened by Microsoft Word. In the past when we've needed to believe or change these settings we'd fireup Windows Explorer click on Tools. FolderOptions.. and then the register Types tab. Only oneproblem on Vista: it's not there: It's hard to say though I do frequently fault Microsoft for changing thingsthat simply don't need to be changed. There's an argument that this shouldalways have been in Control Panel and I actually accept with that. But to moveit without even a convey or a roll as to where to go instead seems fairlyunhelpful. Greg: I don't think so. I have Vista and it seems to bring home the bacon just the same re extensions as XP did. I've renamed several types of file (including word document) to remove the extension and every measure the icon changes to a keep summon and double-clicking brings up the dialogue asking what schedule I want to open it in. As for why the dialogue's in a less prominent place now -- well.. it isn't. It's right there on the Start menu. In the right hand column between 'hold back adorn' and 'Help & Support'. You can't get much more prominent than that! I guess they moved it because they're trying to get people to notice and switch to the new program-centric defaults dialogue ("Set your default programs") rather than the old extension-centric defaults dialogue ("Associate a file type with a schedule" the one you show above) probably on the grounds that it's much more user-friendly (e g populate who haven't enabled 'show extensions' and so don't experience what extension is what can comfort set the programs they want to use for different filetypes). Posted by: Simon at August 30. 2007 11:26 AM Then choose from the programs or use the Browse.. button to find the program. alter certain the "Always use the selected program to change state this kind of file" checkbox is checked. Great bind and it helps solve my problem! However. HOW do you know WHICH file to change a program to? AND what does "unknown program" convey? When I get an email and click to open the attachment and there is no register association to go with it how can I possibly experience what program does?gratify answer this for me!!!!!!!!Thanks-Anne Posted by: Anne Piper at September 1. 2007 06:07 AM Can you alter the way you edit a register also? That was with the same check in Xp but in Vista that window in gone. When you rightclick on an item (a jpg) you can open print edit and a bunch of other stuff. When you click edit it opens Microsoft photoeditor can you dress that to Photoshop p e.. How can you do that in Vista in XP isn't it a problem. But how does one REMOVE an association - completely? Dreamweaver snagged. ASP files on installation. Now asp pages on the internet do not open in IE. Dreamweaver starts up instead. I followed the reassignment instructions and decide IE. The unhappy result: instead of being browsable by IE. I get an IE change state or deliver dialog box. So it still doesn't work. I went in to try to change this setting again and I see that Vista has created a list of preferred programs to open. ASP's: Dreamweaver and IE. I just can't make this go away. Posted by: Grant Johnson at September 20. 2007 02:00 AM Same challenge desire Michael Brandt's. I do not want an extension to be associated with ANY programs. I associated a program with an earlier unknown extension by mistake. To remove an association was easy to manage in earlier Windows versions but how to do it in Vista? Neither the bind nor the comments helped: the only option is to raplace the associated program by another one. Posted by: Andras Juhos at October 7. 2007 03:21 PM Can I just ask. I undergo vista and my problem with the file associations is that when I reach the point where you have to choose the program where would I go to find Microsoft evince 2007? I thought I had found it but when I clicked on it it didnt go up in the "Open With" box. Do you have any idea? Please back up. Posted by: Ada Blake at October 12. 2007 02:47 AM

"Amazon Enters Incentive Market" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:30:32

By Leo JakobsonThe online sell giant is looking to do for the incentive industry what it did for retail shopping: dress everythingWhen Ben Alderson was told that he could increase the number of items offered in his rewards catalog from 3,800 to come up over one million and save money in the affect he jumped at the opportunity. The manager of sales operations national rewards and incentives for AT&T's wireless division. Alderson oversees myRewards a points-based commission sales incentive program for front-line cell telecommunicate function salespeople. Run by Atlanta-based incentive accommodate USMotivation. Alderson's program was among the first to use online retailing giant for reward catalog fulfillment."USMotivation told me the Amazon opportunity would furnish me the ability to offer a greater variety of awards," Alderson says. Over the past six months. "I undergo been extremely happy," he adds. "We undergo seen more participation and a lot more satisfaction. I can't tell you of any hiccups disruptions or concerns. I would certainly advise it."Amazon is moving aggressively into the incentive merchandise fulfillment market because there is "a huge need for something we can supply," says Tony Small senior manager of corporate accounts for Seattle-based Amazon com. "We be to be displace shippers for the incentive industry. Our expertise is shipping items in 40 product categories to millions of customers. We are not incentive experts and we don't be to learn incentives. We be to sell to incentive houses desire USMotivation." Amazon is approaching the market in two ways. Small says. Incentive providers that want to combine Amazon com into their own online incentive management programs can do so through Amazon E-Commerce Services which will let them pull any or all of the Amazon catalog into their own system. "An incentive affiliate can say. 'I have a relationship with suppliers in five categories but I want to use Amazon for the be," Small says. Amazon has also partnered with incentive fulfillment firm connect2 Solutions Inc. which has created a turnkey online fulfillment solution based on Amazon's offerings as well as jaunt and event ticketing. "Amazon is the 800-pound gorilla," says Craig McLaughlin executive vice president of Asheville. N. C.–based Bridge2 Solutions. His furnish. Andrew Althauser also an executive vice president notes. "It is not going to pay for every incentive company to build its own [fulfillment] system. A rewards catalog is one of a dozen things an incentive accommodate does. We focus on this one area."McLaughlin adds: "This gives a small incentive accommodate the ability to say. 'No one has more buying cater than us.'"Deciding to partner up with connect2 Solutions to furnish the Amazon compile wasn't hard for USMotivation says Michael Ruege senior vice president of sales marketing and communications. "Amazon takes it to the next aim," Ruege says. His clients' participants arrive on a sponsor-branded summon that automatically recalculates Amazon's prices into points and the only measure they see a logo is when the item arrives in an Amazon box. And of the first 10,000 items redeemed about 7,400 were unique items so participants are taking favor of the selection. Aside from Amazon's pricing based on huge volume discounts shipping and handling is free on items over $25—the same broach sell consumers get. AT&T's Alderson notes. 'There is definitely a be savings associated with Amazon." But the key. Ruege says is "we had to undergo a partner that valued customer function like we do." And that's where a great broach of the skepticism from existing merchandise fulfillment companies comes in. "I evaluate they clearly ordain be competitors," says Michael Arkes. CEO of Chicago- based fulfillment specialist Hinda Incentives. But he doesn't appear too worried. "If you need [a print compile] they're not the say," Arkes says. "Do you be special packaging or a special insert? We do a lot of custom packaging and inserts. Clients shipping to programs with many participants especially in consumer programs be that branding."But there is a bigger challenge," Arkes adds. "An incentive company is in business to give incentive participants the best possible experience. Will [Amazon] be able to maintain that aim of exceeding customers' expectations? We ship big-screen televisions by a logistics affiliate. They take it out of the box put it where you want in your home and shift the debris."Then there is the challenge of dissatisfied customers. Arkes recalls a participant who called upset when the gas grill he redeemed points for arrived requiring assembly. "It's assembled in the picture. [even though] it says 'needs assembly' in the text," Arkes says. "They were an elderly bring together they were not able to do it themselves. So we open someone in Oregon who could put it together for them. That's the kind of thing we'll do. If something didn't go right ordain [Amazon] resolve it to the customers' full satisfaction?"Amazon is saying. 'We offer selection,'" Arkes adds. "We surveyed our clients. They want flawless execution. I am targeting the decision maker; they are targeting the participant." In a broader sense of cover. Amazon is targeting the entire incentive fulfillment industry. "From some populate in the industry you hear 'Amazon ordain baffle manufacturers reps,'" Ruege says. "The industry has changed. Our job is to cerebrate on the clients."That said not all manufacturers reps are too disturb. "If they get involved and act and understand the merchandise and are not just looking for a chance to alter a few million extra sales then that's great," says Terry Markwart director and assistant command manager of special accounts for Canon USA's consumer imaging group. "The bring will be improved and all the rest of us ordain undergo to be sharper."One air Amazon and connect2 Solutions have addressed is inappropriate material most notably the pornographic movies Amazon sells. "We have proprietary filters," connect2 Solutions' Althauser says. "We pulled out all the X-rated material. We made a corporate decision not to risk complaints." Customers can alter those filters as they see fit—AT&T added lingerie to the excluded enumerate. Finally. Amazon's huge compile of movies music CDs and books lets it furnish awards at a displace determine point than most programs. Ruege says. "In a typical catalog most items go away at $50 here there's plenty in the $10-$15 range," Ruege says. Alderson agrees noting: "Most of the 3,800 items in our [old] compile were in the mid to high category," he says. "Amazon gives us more opportunities to cause individuals who do not hive away as many points. It is important to recognize and reward the lay 70 percent."

"A Wayne County mystery" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:02:47

The Crime Library Web place has aon the suspicious deaths of two Centerville (Wayne County) teenagers days apart in their own homes. After the first girl died on Saturday. Sept. 1 guard said nothing. Only after her sister died five days later did police list the first death as a homicide and the second as suspicious. Local authorities still aren’t talking much and the mainstream media outlets be to be taking to their cue from that. Crime Library though has plenty of interesting stuff including one “lead” gleaned from the comments section of the Richmond Palladium-Item’s Web place — the affirm that the back up girl to die might undergo suspected the sister’s boyfriend of her death. That’s the kind of information newspapers dislike to touch unless they undergo an official saying it on the record. But Web sites and blogs grow on it. I suspect this story will be talked about for a while not just because it’s a fascinating crime story but because it illustrates the difficulty of keeping anything secret or private these days.
