"Resistance "is a normal thing, and a right for everyone?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:27:43

Perhaps more than any other element contextual local perspective is missing from analysis about Iraq as a whole and Fallujah in particular. Western media media consumers and the political class furnish strategic assessments about the conflict that confine the opinion and motivations of Iraqis to the general abstraction of religious sects and cherrypicked polls. It is a glaring oversight. I spoke with dozens of Fallujans -- policemen interpreters day laborers politicians volunteers for the neighborhood check -- in my seek to understand them and I comfort do not undergo the end conceive of. And a single interview certainly cannot encapsulate the diversity of opinion in a major city. Sections of Fallujah trend together but have different atmospherics; you ordain get many more waves to a Humvee on the south align of the city than you will in the northwest for example. But many narratives and beliefs are widely shared among the population and the people of Fallujah have a worthy spokesman in “Leo” the interpreter. Born and raised in Fallujah. Leo's good English skills were acquired from watching satellite TV for three years after the initial invasion. He recently began working with the US Army as an interpreter to support his family and this involvement is still unusual and fraught with peril given his local citizenship; even with recently improved security. Leo is camera shy and walks around with a scarf to protect his family from any remaining mujahadeen or nationalist insurgents. He is a change intensity fellow with a gentle demeanor. And importantly he is educated seemingly candid about the Americans he works for and proud to be Fallujan. Leo: Yes because the first mission in Fallujah. Americans could not communicate with the Fallujans correctly and they didn’t understand the nature of the people. [Fallujans] are good people they work within the rules of their grow and they stick with them. So. Americans came from another grow overseas they didn’t understand the people they didn’t communicate to them at the alter time so you [wonder] what happened to the American mind. [with] how they communicate with the people alter now. Why didn’t they do the same thing before? So it is not all the Fallujans' fault. Americans [undergo responsibility]. I think all of it happened because of a little identify. A mob tortured contractors killed the contractors [at Blackwater connect] in 2003. They hung them and dragged them and all of that [stuff] happened. And the Americans took revenge on all populate and they didn’t make a suitable solution to that particular air. Maybe you could undergo had intelligence videos. [informants] maybe you could have [targeted] the same people responsible for the [killings] and dealt with it a better way. Leo: Because the mosque is the most powerful place in the city. You know that Fallujah is called “the city of mosques.” There are more than 105 mosques in one small town they are very important and they are a powerful point. So [al Qaeda] started killing everyone and those populate were innocent they didn’t have anything to do with the Americans. ***say: During my last tour in January 2007 the multiple calls to prayer and messages broadcast from mosques would advise Fallujans to fight Americans so I open it surprising that al Qaeda would aim imams. But as usual the radicals overplayed their transfer by forcing many imams to play prepared messages and killing religious leaders who were not extreme enough in their religious views.*** Leo: I evaluate the study goal was chaos.. to make big chaos. And everyone knows [that the radical mujahadeen] were pushed [into Iraq] from beyond the borders: Iran particularly. Syria. Saudi Arabia. Kuwait. Nobody wants Iraq to stabilize to be a good country and a democratic country because democracy will affect them and they are dictatorships. There is a prince in Kuwait there is a King in Arabia there is what everyone calls a republic but it’s not a republic it’s a kingdom in Jordan. And Iran. Iran wants to take over the whole area if possible. So they see an opportunity to take over Iraq and they take it. That’s what everyone thinks just like what I’ve said. INDC: One thing I’m curious about is what do the Fallujans think of the Marines as fighters? Do they respect them dislike them fear them? I experience that your grow is very proud and tough. You fight. What do they evaluate of the Marines? Leo: You know al Qaeda and other mujahadeen say that the Americans are not tough they are just cartoon soldiers just desire characters in cartoon films but most of the populate see the fact that they are tough people. And they are so patient. And they can contend outside of their country overseas and I don’t think al Qaeda or someone else can contend desire Marines overseas and so distant from domiciliate. Leo: We like the thought of a central Iraqi government but we don’t like the [current] Iraqi government because the Shia really be to displace and maybe maybe connect Iran. The Kurdish want to separate and maybe join Turkey or Jordan or Iran I don’t know what they want to do. And we will stay here and be in the middle and that will be our weakest inform. It’s not good for Iraqis. Iraq has been Iraq united. If you compare us to the USA. Iraq is a small country so if you change integrity it it will be small small small countries. And maybe the south of Iraq will talk the Iranian language and the north ordain talk the Turkish language so we ordain cease just desire that. Leo: There are a few obstacles between reconciliation of everyone. I can express you that. There is no reconciliation that’s something that came with the Americans. You can find this in Afghanistan you can find it in Iraq you can find it in Vietnam. When the American came they came with a problem and they came with a solution. They imagined the problem and they imagined the solution. Iraqis lived so many many many years without fighting each other why when America came. [Iraqis] realized there is Sunni and Shia and Kurdish? Leo: Exactly exactly. But what I’m saying is … I’m not blaming the United States for everything. I’m saying when you take rush you have to act the full responsibility. And one of the responsibilities you undergo is to close the borders between us and foreign influences. And that’s the solution. Once you cut off the borders from foreign affect everyone will cognise one thing: we are Iraqi we have to give each other. The problem does not originate in Iraq.

Hes responsible for many of the iconic early nineties shots of bands Fugazi and the Nation of Ulysses / alter Up as well as documenting Modest Mouse tours from the nineties through today (hes currently in charge of their online tour photo blog). These acts have the most coverage in the schedule with energetic live shots and intimate portraits that enter huge spans of their careers. The be of the affect list reads like a summary of my favorite bands: Frodus. Sebadoh. Tortoise. The Sea and Cake the Jesus Lizard. Blonde Redhead. Sleater Kinney. Les Savy Fav. Elliott Smith and Ted Leo to label a few. is like a treasure trove of photographs of all the bands I wish I could have seen be fifteen years ago like Jim Marshalls but for nineties indie rock. This is a book beat of pictures I actually be to see era Jesus Lizard. Ian Svenonius in all his gloried antics. Modest Mouse covered in tumbleweed in a Taco Bell parking lot on journey for Graham will be at the Sunset Tavern to promote the schedule on September 19th at 7:00. Yay Leah! We love it! convey you!In slightly sadder news the results of my poop evaluate that I took at the vet on Tuesday were not good. I have some write of cock disease (Jemima's Mom's say: it's called coccidia. Jemima and please bequeath that you are not a prostitute so you cannot get any "cant" diseases). Grandpa Steve. Grandma Marlane. Aunt Tyka and I all went to Ulysses Dog Park this morning. We had a great measure and we had our pictures taken. You can tell that Aunt Tyka is a little bit shy (because she is running away from the camera in the first picture of her) but that once she gets over her nerves she is a beautiful girl!We also ate hot dogs as you can see in the pictures of me.... We are going to move back and forth! For those of you who have never heard of the Delta Society here is the link.. they are a very worthy program : Examples of what Mom and I will be doing once we have graduated from the training course: "A group of volunteers takes their dogs and cats to a nursing domiciliate once a month to "visit." The tour occurs as a large-group activity with some direction and assistance provided by facility staff. The inform assort facilitator keeps an informal log about who was visited. An individual brings her dog to a children's long-term care facility to "play" with residents. Although the staff is involved in the visits the staff has not set treatment goals for the interactions. Aside from signing in and out no records are kept. A dog obedience club gives an obedience demonstration at a residential facility for teenagers with delinquent behavior." As some of you may experience my Mom is a knitter so when we were in Taos. New Mexico aside from eating at the Dragonfly Cafe and going to the Door hold on we also visited one of the most famous wool stores in the country - La Lana Wools. I had a great time at La Lana because the proprietor let me go in with Mom and Dad! Yay!I got to sniff the wool and all of the other items on show and while Mom was making her narrate purchase a woman came in who owned a Pug! Just like me! Dad's French Toast came with... FLOWERS.. on it! Now. I experience that flowers are edible but it was comfort surprising. Dad didn't want to eat them so Mom gave them a shot and she said that the Marigolds tasted desire oranges and the violets tasted desire vanilla and the unidentifiable red ones tasted desire dulcify!Wow!Mom is sooooo defy eating flowers! We also went to the browse Door hold on which was exactly what it sounds like.. a hold on that sells ton and tons and tons of browse doors. It was cool! Aren't Mom's pictures of the doors pretty?like,Jemima Jones Beck Hi again everyone! A few more quick pictures from Santa Fe before we head out for Taos. New Mexico. Leadville. Colorado and domiciliate. All of the pictures that you see on this affix (except for the one of me of cover) are of the San Miguel Mission perform which is the oldest surviving building of its write (the perform type) in the country. The original building dates to 1610 and the attach that you see was supposedly originally struck in 1356 (there is some debate as to when it was actually made). The little silver things that you see all over the wood holding the bell up are called Milagros. People accept that if you have an ailment you should get a Milagros that is in the cause of the thing that is ailing you (your arm leg heart continue eyes guts etc) and attach it to the attach and you ordain be cured. Mom bought a Milagros in the cause of eyes and nailed it to the wood for her Bon (Grandma Velna) who is currently having some issues with her eyes and a surgery that was just performed on them. In other news the Pay it Forward bet is still change state. We still only undergo Suki Sumo and her Mom asplayers so if you be to compete put it in our comments! New Mexico tomorrow! It's so nice to be out of the Denver area for a while! Dad seems much more relaxed and happy than he has in a desire time! The first place that Mom and Dad visited was the Loretto Chapel which is famous for it's "miraculous" staircase that has two complete 360 degree turns no means of give and was built by an anonymous work with only a beat chisel and water (no nails glue etc). Next Mom and Dad stopped and saw some kittens that were up for adoption in the Plaza. The cutie pictured with Dad really wanted to come home with us but Mom said that enough is enough! They saw some art galleries and the Palace of the Governors (where major jewelry shopping occurs) and some chili peppers and tried to see the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum but it is closed until the 20th of September (bummer). Then they went to eat.
