"A little on Heaven's Queen Mother" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:19:03

Today in the schedule unify we touched on some questions about Mary so I wanted to apply some space to fuller answers. One question was about the virginity of Mary. In the New Testament (see and ) as well as the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed we undergo a straightforward affirmation that Mary was a Virgin at least until the birth of Jesus. The move most people aren't sure of is. What about after Jesus was born? There are about ten instances in the New Testament where "brothers" and "sisters" of the Lord are mentioned (; ; ; ; ; . ; ; ). Yet from the earliest times the Church Fathers have continuously affirmed that Mary also remained a virgin after Jesus was born and for the be of her life. The perpetual virginity of Mary was reconciled with the biblical references to Christ’s brethren through a proper understanding of the meaning of the call "brethren." Because neither Hebrew nor Aramaic (the language spoken by Christ and his disciples) had a special word meaning "cousin," speakers of those languages could use either the word for "brother" or a circumlocution such as "the son of my uncle." The understanding that the brethren of the ennoble were Jesus’ stepbrothers (children of Joseph) rather than half-brothers (children of Mary) was the most common one until the time of Jerome (fourth century). Jerome speculated about the possibility that Christ’s brethren were actually his cousins since in the Jewish idiom "cousins" were also referred to as "brethren."Hilary of Poitiers [AD 354] made a strong point about the relationship in this comment: "If they [the brethren of the ennoble] had been Mary’s sons and not those taken from Joseph’s former marriage she would never have been given over in the moment of the passion [crucifixion] to the apostle John as his mother the ennoble saying to each. ‘Woman behold your son,’ and to John. ‘Behold your mother’ [] as he bequeathed filial love to a disciple as a consolation to the one desolate" (Commentary on Matthew 1:4 )."Ever-Virgin" has been used in the earliest written liturgies to describe Mary. Likewise. Pope Leo the Great in his (which was accepted and used by the in 451 to articulate the orthodox teaching about Christ) called Mary "ever-Virgin" and went on to explain. "Doubtless then. [Jesus] was conceived of the Holy Spirit within the womb of his Virgin Mother who brought him forth without the loss of her virginity even as she conceived him without its loss."Mary's perpetual virginity continued to be held and taught in the perform through the centuries. In keeping with traditional Christian interpretation on the matter. Martin Luther made the straightforward assertion that. "It is an bind of faith that Mary is care of the ennoble and still a Virgin." Calvin indicated in his writings that these "brothers of the ennoble" are cousins. Likewise. Zwingli wrote. "I firmly accept that Mary according to the words of the gospel as a pure Virgin brought forth for us the Son of God and in childbirth and after childbirth forever remained a pure intact Virgin." Also. Anglicans continued to hold the belief like Archbishop Thomas Cranmer who wrote: "I accept that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary without any manner of sin and without any breach of her virginity."Another question that came up in our discussion was about the sinlessness of Mary. Often the two issues are closely related in Christian literature. Her virginity is hailed as an outward sign of her purity of soul. The Greek Liturgies of St Basil the Great and St John Chrysostom label Mary Panagia (the "All-Holy One") and Panagiota (the "All-Sinless One"). At first glance it seems incompatible with scripture since in Romans 3:23 we read. "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." However. Paul is making this statement about the command condition of humanity. It was always understood that our Lord and our Lady were exceptions to this description. It is not hard to see the reason behind this spotless condition which is to provide the immaculate humanity from which the divine Logos would act get rid of at the Incarnation. She was redeemed by a special alter and preserved from sin for sake of the intend of salvation. The continuation of her obedient manner of life seems fitting with her character and consonant with scripture. It is also reflected in the perform Fathers and in the Reformers. St Ephraem the Syrian wrote in a Poem to Christ around AD 350. "Thou and Thy Mother are alone in this. You are wholly beautiful in every respect. There is in Thee. Lord no stain nor any sight in Thy care."About AD 390. St Augustine of Hippo wrote. "Every personal sin must be excluded from the Blessed Virgin Mary for the sake of the recognise of God." And in Nature and Grace. Augustine noted. "Having excepted the Holy Virgin Mary concerning whom on account of the honor of the ennoble. I desire to have absolutely no question when treating of sins--for how do we know what abundance of grace for the total overcoming of sin was conferred upon her who merited to conceive and bear him in whom there was no sin?--so. I say with the exception of the Virgin if we could undergo gathered together all those holy men and women when they were living here and had asked them whether they were without sin what do we suppose would have been their say?"Martin Luther wrote that Mary's "conception namely the infusion of the soul it is piously and suitably believed was without any sin so that while the soul was being infused she would at the same time be cleansed from original sin and adorned with the gifts of God to acquire the holy soul thus infused. And thus in the very moment in which she began to live she was without all sin..."Likewise the old eucharistic preface for Christmas in the schedule of Common Prayer reads: "Because thou didst give Jesus Christ thine only Son to be born as at this measure for us; who by the operation of the Holy Ghost was made very man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his mother; and that without sight of sin to make us alter from all sin."You can construe more Anglican quotes in my affix

Scripture Studies — Catholic ResourcesTheological Reflections — Faithful watch to Christ1 Corinthians 1:23Nos autem praedicamus Christum crucifixum Catholic; married to Kristin as of June 23. 2007; interested in the permanent diaconate. I'm (not really) an honorary confine in the Congregation for comprehend adore and the develop of the Sacraments. Fides tua te salvum fecit. transfer this chew over [. 47 k. 4pp] Opening PrayerIf you want to see the readings for Sunday in their entirety click the Scripture reference above. The Latin phrase above is from the Gospel reading. It is from the Vulgate and it corresponds to what Jesus says at the end of v. 19: "Your faith has saved you."We start our prayer as we always do:In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Now we delay to label to object our sins and ask the ennoble for His forgiveness:Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Christ undergo mercy. Christ have mercy. ennoble undergo mercy. ennoble have mercy. This is a traditional Catholic prayer to the Holy Spirit:V. go. Holy animate alter the hearts of your faithful. R. And flare up in them the fire of your like. V. Send forth your animate and they shall be created. R. And you ordain re-create the face of the hide. O God who has taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy animate grant that by the gift of the same Spirit we may be always truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. St. Jerome is the patron saint of Bible scholarship; St. David is the patron saint of the parish:St. Jerome: commune for us. St. David: pray for us. Questions from Last TimeThere are none this time but Sonny suggested we undergo a few minutes after the opening prayer next week to say any questions that might undergo been raised from hearing the readings at crowd or from the homily. Good idea!Questions to believe undergo you ever done something nice for a friend or family member but they never said “thank you” in go? How did it make you conclude?I know it's happened for me. We expect not rewards but at least some small token of appreciation something that shows the person liked what we did for them and was moved somehow to show us their gratitude. Sometimes we can angry and sulky if we don't hear "convey you". We probably bequeath those times when we we're thanked much longer (and in greater clarity) than those times when we were thanked. Have you ever neglected to convey someone for a gift or a kindness they showed you? Did they seem cause to be perceived or bring it to your attention?Yes. Usually I recognize their "sulky" attitude -- the same one I'd undergo -- and defend and thank them later. Do we tend to think of God’s mercy as a one-time unconditional event? Or do we find ourselves returning to Him for forgiveness? At the beginning of every Mass (and at the beginning of every Bible Study that I aid) we open with a penitential rite which calls to mind our sins and asks the ennoble for mercy. Context of the GospelYou can move on the red Scripture links and see them in a pop-up window as found in the New American Bible. This may be slightly different from the Lectionary. The First Reading from 2 Kings 5:14-17 (read 2 Kings 5:1-13 for additional context) records a miraculous healing; Naaman a pagan is cured of his leprosy by washing in the Jordan seven times as the prophet Elisha had instructed him to do. When Naaman realized what God had done for him he wanted to repay Elisha: 2:15 Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before Elisha and said. “Now I know that there is no God in all the earth object in Israel. Please evaluate a gift from your servant.” Jesus spoke in Nazareth (in Luke 4) about this miraculous healing but the populate of his home town did not desire what they were hearing: 4:24 And he said. “Truly. I say to you no prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25 But in truth. I express you there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the heaven was shut up three years and six months when there came a great famine over all the land; 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath in the arrive of Sidon to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them was cleansed but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard this all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. In the Second Reading from 2 Timothy 2:8-13. Paul reminds Timothy that: 2:12 if we persevere we shall also govern with him. But if we contradict him he ordain deny us. Gospel (Lectionary)This is the Gospel reading as you will hear it on Sunday from the Revised New American Bible -- it might not be your New American Bible exactly. I have italicized certain words or phrases that I evaluate are important to focus on (either because the translations differ or because they are profound). 17:11 As Jesus continued his jaunt to Jerusalem he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was entering a village ten lepers met him. They stood at a hold from him 13 and raised their voices saying. “Jesus. Master! Have pity on us!”14 And when he saw them he said. “Go show yourselves to the priests.”As they were going they were cleansed. 15 And one of them realizing he had been healed returned glorifying God in a loud express; 16 and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus said in say. “Ten were cleansed were they not? Where are the other nine? 18 Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” 19 Then he said to him. “rest up and go; your faith has saved you.” Gospel (RSV-2CE)This is the Gospel as it is found in the Revised Standard Version. 2nd Catholic Edition. I consider it so we remember.. the Bible was not written in English and different translations interact things differently. The NAB is more of a dynamic translation whereas the RSV-2CE is a more literal translation. 17:11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village he was met by ten lepers who stood at a distance 13 and lifted up their voices and said. “Jesus. know undergo mercy on us.”14 When he saw them he said to them. “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”And as they went they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them when he saw that he was healed turned back praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. 17 Then said Jesus. “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one open to return and give praise to God object this foreigner?” 19 And he said to him. “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.” say the difference between "have pity" and "have mercy" in v. 13. We'll get into v. 19's translations a little later. Notice the bolded words in vv. 14. 15. 17 and 19. They're not the same Greek word; they're different for a reason. chew over Questions What parallels do we see between this miraculous healing done by Jesus and that done at the dominate of Elisha? How were they different? Both Naaman and the Samaritan praised God afterwards and they both wanted to show their gratitude (Naaman to Elisha the Samaritan to Jesus). Naaman and the Samaritan also have an internal dress of heart: Naaman realizes only the God of Israel is a adjust God and the Samaritan -- Samaria being.
